Frequently asked questions
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of a rectangle, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon — for example, 16:9 or 4:3. It describes the shape of the image or screen without specifying the actual pixel dimensions. Two screens with the same aspect ratio will display the same shape even if one is much larger than the other.
16:9 is the standard widescreen format used for HD and 4K televisions, YouTube videos, and computer monitors. 4:3 was the traditional TV and early computer monitor format, still used in some presentations. 1:1 is a square format popularized by Instagram. 9:16 is the vertical format for smartphone screens and short-form video (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts). 21:9 is an ultrawide cinematic format used in some monitors and films.
Divide the width by the first number of the aspect ratio, then multiply by the second number. For example, to find the height of a 16:9 image that is 1920 pixels wide: 1920 ÷ 16 × 9 = 1080 pixels. The calculator does this automatically — enter any two values and it computes the third.
Displaying an image or video at the wrong aspect ratio causes stretching or squishing, which looks unprofessional. When embedding videos, designing thumbnails, or preparing images for specific platforms, you must match the required aspect ratio exactly. The calculator helps you find the correct dimensions to crop or resize to without distorting the content.
YouTube thumbnails should be 16:9 with a minimum size of 1280 × 720 pixels. This is also the standard aspect ratio for YouTube videos. Using 16:9 ensures your thumbnail fills the preview area correctly without black bars or cropping. The maximum file size for thumbnails is 2MB.
Aspect ratio describes the shape (proportions) of an image, while resolution describes the total pixel count. Two images can have the same aspect ratio but completely different resolutions — for example, 1280×720 and 3840×2160 are both 16:9 but at very different quality levels. Resolution determines image sharpness and file size; aspect ratio determines how the image fits into a given space.
Divide the width by the height, then simplify the fraction by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor. For example, an image that is 1920 × 1080: GCD is 120, so 1920 ÷ 120 = 16 and 1080 ÷ 120 = 9, giving 16:9. The calculator does this simplification automatically when you enter the dimensions.
Instagram supports multiple aspect ratios: 1:1 (square) for the classic grid post, 4:5 (portrait, 1080×1350 px) which takes up the most feed space and tends to perform well, and 1.91:1 (landscape, 1080×566 px) for wider shots. For Stories and Reels, use 9:16 (1080×1920 px). Choosing the right ratio ensures your image is not cropped unexpectedly when displayed.
